Mercedes-Benz driverless vehicles
More than one science fiction movie features that marvel of transportation: the driverless vehicle. But how close are we really to fully autonomous cars? Maybe closer than you think. Mercedes-Benz driverless vehicles are already in the concept phase, and look like something straight from a futuristic blockbuster.
Specifically, the Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion concept car which made its debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2015 is a sleek, autonomous vehicle with a bullet-like exterior. While this particular driverless car isn’t ready to hit the highways anytime soon, it can drive itself in test environments using sensors like those used in features like Collision Prevention Assist on many new Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Other less-futuristic-looking Mercedes-Benz driverless vehicles are already being tested in more rigorous environments.
Many companies have been working on, and have had limited success, with autonomous vehicles, but it is in the interior where the Mercedes-Benz F 015 is a step beyond anything else. Though the designers have left in a small steering wheel and gas and brake pedals (maybe more for the psychological comfort of the passengers than anything else), the concept car is designed to make the driving experience more like coming home. All four luxurious chairs in the cabin swivel toward the inside of the car so passengers can look at each other face-to-face and there are multiple touchscreens. In theory, the Mercedes-Benz passengers of the future would be able to comfortably talk, read, or even email and use social media while the car drives itself.
The concept car is only one example of the advances in automotive technology that Mercedes-Benz is constantly working on. The Future Truck 2025 autonomous semi truck is also in the testing stage, and looks to revolutionize trucking when it really gets on the road.
When will autonomous vehicles be available at to test drive (or test ride) at Loeber Motors? Probably not for a couple of decades. But on a scale of things (where the original Jurassic Park movie came out more than 20 years ago) that’s not very far away at all.
