What Does the Porsche Logo Stand for?

The Porsche logo is among the most iconic in the entire automotive industry, proudly displayed on legendary models like the Porsche 911 and Boxster. But it hasn’t always been directly associated with performance cars. In fact, the origins of the Porsche logo trace back to the coat of arms of the state of Württemberg of former Weimar Germany, which once called Stuttgart (where Porsche’s headquarters is located) its capital. We did some digging to help answer the question, “What does the Porsche logo stand for?” so we could get a glimpse into the company’s storied history.

Since Porsche vehicles were, and still are, built in Stuttgart, the coat of arms of Stuttgart and the coat of arms of Württemberg (of former Weimar Germany) were combined to create Porsche logo. While the center crest still heavily resembled the Württemberg coat of arms, it was a clear variation as the symbols were combined with text that read “Porsche” and “Stuttgart,” which are still both present on the logo today.

The Porsche logo was established in the 1950s and has undergone very few changes since it was originally designed, unlike many automotive logos which have evolved greatly through the years.

While the Porsche logo’s origins trace back to several coats of arms of former states, the logo is now a clear symbol of incredible automotive performance. After more than 60 years, the logo has only grown in prominence and still sits proudly in front of all-new models like the 2015 Porsche Macan.
