Apple CarPlay has been a hot topic in the automotive world for some time now, and rightfully so. At the 2014 Geneva Motor Show and through a multitude of online videos, we’ve all had a chance to see it in action. For iPhone users, it is an easy way to take advantage of smartphone functionality through a vehicle’s built-in display.
Since its official debut in March of 2014, Mercedes-Benz has been on board as one of the Apple’s partnering automakers, however, it has not yet been rolled out to the public, which begs the question, when will Apple CarPlay be available in Mercedes-Benz vehicles?
Unfortunately, the answer is not simple. At least not yet.
While there were talks of Apple CarPlay integration in the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, support was delayed. Now, it appears Apple CarPlay will makes its official debut in the 2016 Mercedes-Benz A-Class, which of course, is not available in the United States.
What that means for current and future Mercedes-Benz owners in the United States is that we should expect to see AppleCar Play in Mercedes-Benz vehicles starting with the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
While CarPlay has slowly been making its way into select vehicles over the course of the past year, it looks as though we’ll have to wait until the 2017 model year to see it introduced in Mercedes-Benz models. While that information is only strong speculation at this point, we’ll be sure to keep you updated with any news regarding the availability of Apple CarPlay for Mercedes-Benz.
What is Apple CarPlay?
If you aren’t one to keep up with automotive tech and you’ve just come across Apple CarPlay, its purpose is quite straightforward — easily integrate iPhone functionality into built-in vehicle displays. Designed to be hands-free, or close to it, it relies heavily on Siri (Apple’s voice recognition program) and a familiar interface to help drivers stay connected on the go.
When Mercedes-Benz vehicles officially support Apple CarPlay, we’ll provide a full run-down of the integrations available, but until then, watch the video below from Mercedes-Benz to see some of the key capabilities you can expect when it debuts.
