Autonomous vehicles have been a huge topic of conversation over the course of the past few years, and as we inch closer to road-ready fully autonomous vehicles, we’re sure to see more autonomous features making their way into new models. Mercedes-Benz has been at the forefront of autonomous tech and research, evidenced by the Vision Tokyo, F 015 and several other self-driving concepts. So it’s not surprising that Mercedes-Benz has also been a leader in offering autonomous features to help improve the safety and convenience in its current model lineup.
What is DISTRONIC PLUS?
Mercedes-Benz vehicles equipped with DISTRONIC PLUS have the ability to automatically brake and accelerate based on traffic conditions.
Think of it as smart cruise control, or as it’s sometimes called, adaptive cruise control.
In traditional vehicles, you’d have to tap the brakes and adjust your cruising speed as you approach slower moving vehicles. With DISTRONIC PLUS, the vehicle will sense the preceding vehicles and automatically apply the brakes to adjust and maintain speed. It can take you all the way down to a complete stop when necessary.
As the road ahead clears, the vehicle will automatically return to its initial cruising speed. Overall, the system makes your drive simpler and safer.
How To Use Mercedes-Benz DISTRONIC PLUS
The first step to using Mercedes-Benz DISTRONIC PLUS is setting your cruise control. To set your cruise, accelerate to 20 mph or more and use the lever on the left side of your steering column (the one that is not your blinker). Set your cruise by moving that lever up or down to the point of resistance. You can increase or decrease your speed the same way.
DISTRONIC PLUS is automatically activated, so you don’t need to do anything to turn it on. However, you can adjust certain aspects of it.
You’ll notice you can turn the end portion of that cruise control lever. Turning that will adjust the following distance between you and the vehicle ahead, which is indicated on the instrument panel. Of course, if there are sudden stops, manual braking is recommended, and the system will sound an audible alerts to help you react.
Mercedes-Benz DISTRONIC PLUS adds convenience and safety to your drive. See how the system works for yourself by getting behind the wheel of one of the many Mercedes-Benz models equipped with this autonomous technology.
