The Next Step Towards Autonomous Driving

While the Mercedes-Benz DRIVE PILOT does not make the vehicle completely autonomous, it comes pretty close. This system will make its debut on the redesigned 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class this summer, and it will make driving on the highway or down a country road simpler than ever before. There are three systems that go into DRIVE PILOT. They are:

Distance Pilot

By utilizing a radar system at the front of the vehicle, the Distance Pilot DISTRONIC will be able to follow a vehicle in front of it at a select distance, which you can set on your steering wheel. It is also capable of following traffic at speeds of up to 130 mph. We don’t recommend testing it at that speed, but it’s nice to know you can if you would like. It also requires less work on the driver’s part, as far as operating the pedals.

Steering Pilot

The Steering Pilot works with the DIstance Pilot to keep the vehicle steady behind the one it is following. Steering Pilot also takes into account objects around it and will make adjustments as necessary if the driver does not. Steering Pilot will relieve the stress drivers face when they are stuck in traffic jams as it can automatically maneuver through traffic. How does it know when to maneuver you ask?

Active Lane-Change Assist

The vehicle with change lanes automatically thanks to the all new Active Lane-Change Assist system. By utilizing a radar sensor and camera, the vehicle can shift lanes for the driver when requested. How does the driver request to change lanes? By simply turning on their blinker and after being on for two seconds the Active Lane-Change Assist will move you into the indicated lane.
