As you expect from a luxury brand the caliber of Mercedes-Benz, innovation never stops. In 2014, we were lucky enough to welcome the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA to the Loeber Motors lot. For 2015, we’ll once again be making space for a number of debut models, including the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe. Although the Mercedes-Benz GLE is classified as a coupe, it features a number of utility attributes that are reminiscent of the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA compact crossover.

To help distinguish these new models from one another, we’ll compare the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE vs. Mercedes-Benz GLA and point out some of the key differences to help you decide which model is right for you.

Size is among the first considerations drivers will look at to determine how it will accommodate passengers. The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe is considerably larger than the GLA, stretching 192.2 inches long and 78.9 inches wide. By comparison, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA is 173.9 inches long and 71 inches wide.

What are the differences between the Mercedes-Benz GLE and GLA?

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE is larger than the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA in every key dimension, but size only begins the list of differences. In terms of performance, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 AMG Sport and the Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG are both stellar performers, but with different approaches. The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 AMG Sport gets its power from a twin-turbo V-6 capable of 362 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. Although the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG’s 355 horsepower rating nearly matches that of the GLE AMG Sport, it does so behind the power of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder AMG engine.

Both the Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 AMG Sport and GLA45 AMG utilize 4MATIC all-wheel drive, but power is sent to that system from a choice of two transmissions. The 2016 GLE Coupe utilizes a 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic transmission while the GLA45 AMG houses a 7-speed AMG Speedshift transmission. While they function differently on a few levels, they both feature steering-wheel mounted controls for full manual control.

While specs and feature comparisons on paper are a good baseline for choosing your next vehicle, the best way to get a feel for these models is by getting behind the wheel for a test drive at Loeber Motors.
