Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class vs. Mercedes-Benz M-Class
Comparing the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class vs the Mercedes-Benz M-Class is a strange practice, because they are actually the same, or at least incredibly similar, vehicles. As Mercedes-Benz shifts the names of its vehicles, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class SUV replaces the M-Class SUV for the new model year. While the GLE-Class SUV replaces the M-Class in name, the 2016 model also is a clear evolution from the outgoing M-Class.
At first glance, there are some noticeable differences between the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class and Mercedes-Benz M-Class. In the front fascia, the new GLE-Class SUV bears resemblance to its sibling, the GLE Coupe, with a slightly sloped nose. Rather than the three-bar grille featured on the M-Class SUV, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class sports a two-bar grille in its base configurations and a single bar in GLE63 AMG models. Up front, the GLE-Class has fewer hood creases and the headlamps look be slightly more angled, providing a more aggressive look. Past the front, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class and M-Class are quite similar, both featuring wraparound rear glass with a distinct C-pillar.
What are the differences between the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class and M-Class?
Inside, there are a few more striking differences, as the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class features an interior nearly identical to its coupe counterpart. The COMAND interface is noticeably different in the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, as its partially integrated screen floats above the dash, replacing the fully integrated unit from the M-Class. That raised screen allows the traditional knobs and buttons to shift upward on the center console, creating more leg space and an overall roomier feel.
In terms of power and performance, things remain about the same as the M-Class become the GLE-Class. The most notable changes are the addition of the GLE550e Plug-In Hybrid and the Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S, which were not previously available. The base AMG GLE63 model also sees an increase in power from its biturbo V-8, with an increase of more than 30 horsepower.
The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class SUV release date is set for August 2015. Reserve a test drive upon its arrival and get behind the wheel of a 2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class as a basis for comparison when the new GLE SUV arrives.
