2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS vs. Mercedes-Benz GL-Class
Mercedes-Benz is in the midst of a major product overhaul that has seen a number of vehicles undergo refreshes and name changes. In the past year, the Mercedes-Benz M-Class has become the GLE and the Mercedes-Benz GLK has become on the GLC. Now, it's time for the brand's flagship SUV to undergo a similar change, as the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is set to become the Mercedes-Benz GLS for the 2017 model year.
In addition to the new badge, Mercedes-Benz's largest SUV is also undergoing a number of changes for 2017. To help you decide whether you want to wait for the GLS, which is expected to arrive at Loeber Motors in March 2016, or act now on the 2016 GL-Class, we put the two models side-by-side in a 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS vs. Mercedes-Benz GL-Class comparison.

Similarities and Differences between the Mercedes-Benz GLS and GL-Class
As you can see in the table above, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS450 utilizes the same biturbo V-6 engine as the GL450, which both represent the SUVs' base offerings. Speaking purely from an engine output perspective, there is no difference between the two models.
However, there are some changes to the powertrain. Most notably, the 2017 GLS will feature a nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission, which replaces the 7-speed automatic transmission found in the GL-Class. With two additional gears and a lightweight construction, we expect to see an increase in fuel-economy, although those figures are not yet available.
On the performance front, DYNAMIC SELECT is one of the best new features to look forward to in the Mercedes-Benz GLS. Offering up to six transmission modes, drivers can quickly adjust key vehicle systems with the turn of dial to personalize their experiences behind the wheel. With settings like SLIPPERY and OFF-ROAD (optional) to help you handle conditions and options like SPORT and COMFORT to customize the vehicle's performance, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS adapts to your driving demands.
Although the flagship SUV will retain its overall look and feel, there will be a variety of tweaks and upgrades that are expected to modernize the SUV. As Mercedes-Benz continues to reshape its vehicle lineup, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLS will take the flagship SUV torch from the GL-Class beginning in late spring 2016 and into the future.
